You Are My Sunshine

I grew up singing the chorus of this song. It is perhaps one of the better known folk songs. Though I know the chorus to the song quite well, I was extremely unfamiliar with the versus and was glad I had gotten the opportunity to hear the song in full. I often thought of it as a song that was sung to children, as it was sung to me as a child. However when I heard the full song I began to think of it as a more romantic song.

There were a theme of longing in the song that I felt while I sang it. In fact the first two lines are evident of this longing through the idea of a dream.

"The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms."

For this piece I wanted to create a colorful scene that I felt could be a more imaginary or a "dreamlike" interpretation for the song. I chose to use the warm undertone over the sheet to enhance this dreamlike affect and the idea of the sun and the colors of light being shown and raining down was my own interpretation of the chorus.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
you'll never know dear how much I love you
please don't take my sunshine away."

The scene shows the woman longing for the sun which is representative of  the person she is longing for. Also I chose to represent her with an umbrella and the colors of the sun falling to reference the second line of the chorus. The entire theme of the drawing is to depict the sense of longing that is felt though the entire song.
